Good and Evil does run throughout the theme of the book. This book does touch upon Angels and though not a religious treatise, you are compelled to think about the after life. In ways mysterious, Michael and his Mother, Connie become involved in this case and the action kept me turning the pages until the ending, which, satisfied me. There is an amazing twist in this story which I will not disclose. No, this is not going to follow the usual path we have read before. Parker uses this to try and get a new trial and freedom while he is waiting. Something bad is happening and more girls are dying with the signature of Parker's. Meanwhile, the asylum also houses the criminally insane, such as the multiple serial woman killer, Otis Redmon Parker, which Kevin and his partner had put away for the crimes. This novel is the latest, in a long wait, of the Dead Detective Series. Carroll talking to ghosts, you will like this book. If you ever watched the tv series "Topper", with Leo G. One quote: "Only people close to death or spiraling into madness could see me." The characters were believable, even the ghost, who is filled with regret. The book was slow in the first half but became more interesting in the second half. The detectives who do solve the case proceed along standard police procedural lines. I don't usually read paranormal mysteries, but read this one to count for Delaware in my US state challenge. He does not actually help the live detectives solve the case, although he pieces together who the murderer is and how the murders are committed. He follows his son and widow around, trying to protect them from a murderer. The narrator is Kevin Fahey, a dead detective who roams his small hometown in Delaware trying to make amends for being a bad detective and a lousy father/husband. This book is number 3 in the Dead Detective series, but it read ok as a stand alone.
